Emotional & Psychological Support

Pediatric Psycho-Oncology Program (PPOP) 

 

  • The You are Not Alone (YANA) Desk at CanKids Chatai clinics serves to meet initially diagnosed children and families, provide immediate reassurance and guidance and is typically manned by Parent Support Group (PSG) members 

  • The YANA ‘Hold My Hand’ scheme enables each new family to be assigned a Patient Navigator, typically a PSG member 

  • Special psychological intervention clinics enable one-on-one counseling in cases of particular trauma or evident inability to cope 

  • Sharing and Caring Sessions - here families and CanKids staff can in group sessions discuss their experiences, unburden themselves and receive support 

  • Palliative care interventions assist with the mitigation of pain and other symptoms and bereavement support is offered to families whose children do not survive 

  • CanKids’ Child Life Project, under which the rights of children to enjoy their young lives are advocated, includes individual counseling, the creation of child-friendly wards and a hospital dolls project 

  • Research and development of written guidelines and tools in the field  

 

Parent Support Group (PSG) Programs: CanKids encourages parents of children faced with cancer to come together as part of the PSG to support each other and empower and build the capacities of families themselves 

Emotional support, Navigation & Reintegration Program: During treatment and after, Parent Support Forums in Hospitals are held for purposes of information sharing, bridge-building with the medical teams.  

Outings and Celebrations Program:  For outings, gifts and celebrations to uplift spirits thus assist in confronting the challenges of the disease and treatment
